This may seem counter-intuitive, but the more you try to make a relationship with the opposite sex what you want it to be the less it will turn out to be what you want. There is a sense of mystery that must be preserved.
I mean that is this sense: trying real hard to please another person by somehow impressing them may give them a false impression of what you are really like or you'll come across stuck up, selfish and just trying too hard to make it work.
Your self-control in relationship begins with how you open your mouth and what you say.. Sometimes less is more...the less you say, the more you say. This is especially when your talking about yourself.
Honestly assess what are the most precious and valuable things about you as a person---your faith, your family, your friends. Consider carefully how you might represent those things truthfully and thoughtfully. Offer small nuggets of those to the one to whom you would care about and would discern how much they really care about you. You meter and regulate gradually seeing how they receive each thing you share. Pray for wisdom about this constantly. Let them have time to ponder and ask more.
This sharing of yourself verbally will set a tone for the self-control of sharing yourself in many other ways and preserve the mystery of who you are for the one who would care enough to wait upon you in wonder and true respect and honest admiration.
GOD is sovereign, always in control, always guiding, working in the background, gently, silently, shaping, molding, wanting the best for you in His will.
tlw
